Have we thought of?....technology watch list
Here's a list of technologies/needs the district is watching, thinking about, or considering.  Please feel free to add items, post thoughts to help keep us on top of potential services and solutions that should be pursued!

Twitter is one we are watching.  Should we have resources available to twitter---do we monitor and try to help out others twitter use.....where does this fit in...or does it?

The District is mulling over what services to offer for mobile devices or to what extent we work to delivery notices or the virtual presence to various devices.   Do you know there's a Google gadget available for igoogle?  Is this worthwhile?  Other ideas.

Facebook is one that pops up from time to time in discussions.  Obviuosly, a hugely popular service the question is if ths library shoudl try to engage in the facebook world. I sent the following note to Elena today for mgmnt consideration.  We'll see.

Tamara sent me an email this morning about an app that integrates the catalog into Facebook (there are in actuality a number of them out there).  I think it was fairly recently because months(?) ago when I checked Facebook didn’t allow businesses to setup an account but now they do.  Businesses can setup what are called pages (as opposed to profiles). Honestly, I don’t know from the libraries that I saw that there was a lot of activity.  ALA was about one of the only things that had over a 1000 fans…most libraries were under 100.

Question is:  Is there any interest to pursue something like this or should it be marked as considered, and will hold on pursuing.

iphone and mobile device support --- still keeping eyes on this one.  Questio here is how many people would really use it (is it worth the added time to bring up and support)?  Not sure.  Thoughts anyone?

The District did test the AWE software and per below will not be moving forward with the service (but will continue to monitor the solution).

The members did talk about this on Friday and decided that they were not interested.  Thanks for all your hard work with this.

FYI regarding a mobile catalog - a service is now available and we're turning it over to the PSS group to determine if HPLD should offer it or not.    Asked for a decision by the end of Sept. 2010

I wish we could.........

  • provide a smart device to every household in our service areas..
  • provide internet service to every household......
  • provide internet access in the parks
  • use google as our catalog
  • (mike) provide charign stations
  • be the 'free' higher education option ...where we could provide the validation service as well
  • partner with netflix and/or Pay per view  to allow out patrons to download movies
  • have a library night at the movies where library card holders get in for $1 to see the latest flicks
  • actually have Overdrive work on iphones and other mobile devices (currently too painful)
  • have WOW events where we partner with all northern library systems and bring in big shows at Bud Event Center, ...etc
  • have service that libraries provide that designate websites as 'library certified' that indicates the content is accurate/sourced..etc (i.e. a quality stamp)
  • .....and more to come
